Richard J. Caruana is also well known for his stamp designs. He was commissioned his first set by the Malta Post Office in 1978. At the time, although well versed in graphic design, the artist knew very little about stamps, not being a philatelist. However, the subject did help convince him to pursuit this new medium, as he had to design a new Airmail stamp set. From then on he found stamp designing to be a most challenging, but rewarding, activity and enthusiastically accepts new projects when they arise.
The Malta Post Office does not always commission its works but sometimes organises public competitions. Whenever the artist feels that the subject falls within his competence he participates in such competitions, and has been successful on many occasions. In 1993 Caruana broke new ground when he introduced Computer Graphics into stamp designing in Malta. On that occasion, his winning set of stamps for the Games of the Small Nations had been completely designed and produced on the Macintosh and image-setting of colour separations was produced directly from disks rather than through the traditional drum or flat-bed image scanning used up to that time. Computer design was used for all subsequent stamps by the artist.
